The risk of algorithmic bias in artificial intelligence’s applications was pointed out by the members of the European Parliament that led to adopting a resolution in this regard with 377 votes in favor, 248 against, and 62 abstentions. Further, They’ve outlined that human supervision and strong legal powers are needed to prevent discrimination by artificial intelligence, particularly in enforcement laws or border-crossing context as it has been emphasized that human operators must always make the final decisions, and subjects monitored by AI-powered systems must have access to remedy.<\/p>\n

Regarding concerns about discrimination, the text of the resolution states that AI-based identification systems have already misidentified minority ethnic groups which are particularly concerning in the context of law enforcement and the judiciary. Members of the European Parliament have asked to uphold fundamental rights when using these technologies and algorithms by making them transparent, traceable, and sufficiently documented. Moreover, considering privacy rights and human dignity, a permanent ban on the automated recognition of individuals in public spaces has been asked by the members to clarify that citizens should only be monitored when suspected of a crime.<\/p>\n

\u201cFundamental rights are unconditional. For the first time ever, we are calling for a moratorium on the deployment of facial recognition systems for law enforcement purposes, as the technology has proven to be ineffective and often leads to discriminatory results. We are clearly opposed to predictive policing based on the use of AI as well as any processing of biometric data that leads to mass surveillance.
