The European Commission along with the UK\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority\u00a0opened\u00a0a formal antitrust investigation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0into the alleged breach of Facebook of EU competition law.<\/p>\n

As stated by Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager, who is responsible for EU competition policy, over seven million firms use Facebook for advertisements. The investigation found the social media platform\u2019s alleged use of competitors\u2019 advertising data to get ahead in markets where it is active. The investigation also aims to examine whether there are ties between the classified online ads service \u201cFacebook Marketplace\u201d and the platform itself.<\/p>\n

EU and British regulators will assess whether Facebook uses its position to get ahead of its competitors via exploitation of commercially valuable data allegedly provided to it through \u201cFacebook Marketplace.\u201d One way in which this may be done is by receiving precise information on user preferences from competitors\u2019 activities and then using this information to adapt itself to reach consumers.<\/p>\n

In light of this investigation, Vestager said that \u201cIn today\u2019s digital economy, data should not be used in ways that distort competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the allegations are proven, there may be potential breaches of Articles\u00a0101<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0102<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).
