The World Health Organization (WHO) reports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid19.who.int\/region\/searo\/country\/in\">over 21 million confirmed cases<\/a>\u00a0in India solely, accounting for over 40% of the new confirmed cases worldwide last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a global health crisis, and the extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic call for extraordinary measures,\u201d Tai said in a statement. \u201cThe Administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for COVID-19 vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US has played a major role in blocking a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)32581-2\/fulltext\">proposal by India and South Africa to waive certain intellectual property protections<\/a>\u00a0at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) until this week. In April, Democratic senators in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2021\/04\/democratic-senators-urge-biden-to-support-temporary-wto-waiver-of-ip-rights-for-covid-19-vaccines\/\">letter to President Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0urged him to support temporarily waiving IP rights for the vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Biotech companies generally oppose such moves, mentioning concerns about future pandemics, maintaining production facilities, and the overall global response to COVID-19.
