The new requirement would apply to over 70 companies, 31 of which currently have no women on their management boards.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The law, drafted jointly by the Federal Ministry of Justice and Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth aims to amend and supplement Germany\u2019s existing law on the issue,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gesetze-im-internet.de\/bgleig_2015\/index.html\"><strong>Act on Equal Participation of Women and Men regarding Leadership Positions within the Sectors of Private Economy and Public Service<\/strong><\/a>. That 2015 law introduced a requirement that supervisory boards be at least 30 percent female and is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundesregierung.de\/breg-en\/news\/more-women-at-board-level-1835144\"><strong>reported<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to have \u201cled to a tangible increase in the average percentage of seats of supervisory boards held by women.\u201d However, the proportion of women on executive boards has remained low.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth Franziska Giffey said that the new law would be \u201ca milestone for women\u201d and would put an end to women-free boardrooms in Germany\u2019s largest companies.
